    PhD Scholarship at Charles Sturt University, NSW, Australia

    The School of Communication and Creative Industries (SCCI) at Charles Sturt University is offering an exciting opportunity for a fully-funded three year PhD Research Compact Funded Scholarship.

    Scholarship Details
    The 3-year scholarship is set at the same level as an Australian Postgraduate Award (currently $23,728) per year and is open to both Australian and International students ( http://www.csu.edu.au/international/why-csu).
    The successful candidate will have the opportunity to choose a specific topic of his or her interest in consultation with the supervisor of the project, Dr Edward H. Spence. The research to be undertaken will be in the combined disciplines of applied philosophy and applied ethics in the fields of Media and New Media, including the philosophy and/or ethics of Communication and Information Technologies.

    Qualifications
    Applicants will have obtained a relevant Honours degree or a Master?s degree by research with a strong component in philosophy and/or ethics.

    The School of Communication and Creative Industries (SCCI), one of the leading centres of communication and media studies in Australia, is located in Bathurst, a lively inland city with close proximity to Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia ( http://www.visitbathurst.com.au/). Charles Sturt University is the host institution for the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics (CAPPE). The successful candidate will also have contact and access to the research resources of the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics at Charles Sturt University, located in Canberra. http://www.cappe.edu.au/

    PhD Scholarships in bioethics at Macquarie

     

    We are looking for two PhD candidates to work with researchers in the Macquarie University Centre for Agency, Values and Ethics (CAVE) on ARC-funded projects. CAVE offers a thriving and supportive multi-disciplinary community in which to undertake post-graduate research.

    Successful applicants will be encouraged to develop their own research. While this will relate to some aspect of the ARC projects, there is wide scope to negotiate the area and direction of the candidate’s own research. 

     

     

    Project 1: ARC Linkage Project LP110200217: On the cutting edge: promoting best practice in surgical innovation.[Chief Investigators W Rogers, J Johnson, C Townley, A Ballantyne, M Lotz, D Meyerson, G Tomossy, A Eyers, G Maddern and C Thomson]

    Project aims:  

    1. To develop a taxonomy of innovative surgery;
    2. To analyse the conceptual and theoretical features of innovative surgery that generate ethical, legal and regulatory challenges;
    3. To provide tools for identifying, implementing and managing surgical innovation.

     

    Project 2: ARC Discovery Project DP120101092: How do we know what works? Ethics and evidence in surgical research (Chief Investigators Wendy Rogers and Cynthia Townley)

    Project aims:

    a)    to develop an innovative analysis of knowledge and evidence in surgical research and practice;

    b)   to assess the ethical implications of a range of research methods in surgery; and

    c)    to produce a practical framework to guide surgical research.

    The La Trobe philosophy department is currently looking for a philosopher to teach our first year subject, Philosophy of the Natural Sciences, in semester 2 2012. The position would involve 2 lectures per week (and we have a 13 week semester), plus 3 or 4 tutorials per week depending on enrolments in the subject.
